Heathergem Jewelry is made from the stems of heather which are too old to provide nutrition for wildlife and is pulled in a manner to promote growth of new heather. The stalks are cleaned, dyed and then pressed into a block. It is then cut into slices, shaped and fitted by craftsmen before being lacquered, making each piece unique in color. A number of these fittings use Celtic designs dating back to the time of St Columba and the start of Christianity in Scotland.
